How to set up a short study session on iPhone

Turn one small study task into a session with a clear beginning and end. Use a short reminder, check your blocking setup, and leave yourself a useful next step.

Pick one piece of work, choose when to check in, and decide how you will finish the session before starting. For a first attempt, try something small enough to describe in one sentence: “Work through the first two practice questions” or “Read this section and write down what I do not understand.”

Here is a suggested 15-minute session. Fifteen minutes is a starting point you can change, not a scientifically optimal study interval or a promise that you will finish the task.

1. Get the task ready before starting the clock

Open the assignment, find the page, and put your notes beside it. If the work needs a website or document on your phone, open that too.

Write a small target at the top of your notes. Avoid something as broad as “study chemistry.” Try “attempt question one, then identify the step where I get stuck.” That gives you something concrete to review even if the answer is incomplete.

Keep a spare line for unrelated things you remember. You can note “reply about Friday” there without switching tasks immediately.

2. Choose a simple blocking setup

For this walkthrough, use Manual mode and a separate reminder in Apple's Clock app. Confirm the stop control before beginning. TezBlock on the App Store

Select one or two distracting apps for the trial. Leave the study materials and tools you need available. Start the Manual session, then check that a selected distraction is blocked and that your study material still opens.

Treat this as setup time. If the check fails, fix it before starting your study reminder. The support page is a useful next stop if the selection or session behavior is unclear.

3. Set a reminder for your check-in

In Clock → Timers, set 15 minutes, choose a sound under When Timer Ends, and tap Start. Apple says a Clock timer continues while another app is open or the phone sleeps. Apple's timer guide

In this setup, use Clock as your reminder to review the work. Finish the Manual blocking session separately in TezBlock; do not rely on the Clock alert to end it.

If you prefer a blocking session with its own timed end, read the NFC, QR, and timer comparison and check which options your installed version provides.

4. Work on the small target

Put the phone somewhere comfortable to leave alone if you do not need it for the assignment. If you do need it, keep the relevant document or tool open.

When you get stuck, write down the exact obstacle. “I do not know how to rearrange this equation” gives you a more useful next action than “this is impossible.” Use the remaining time to try that step, find the relevant example in your materials, or form a question to ask later.

If you finish early, check one answer or summarize the section in your own words. You do not have to start a larger task just to fill the interval.

5. End with a note you can use next time

When the reminder arrives, pause and write three short lines:

Then finish the Manual session using its configured stop control and check that access has returned as expected. Decide whether to take a break, stop for now, or begin another deliberately chosen session.

If the reminder did not sound, check its end setting before repeating the setup. If blocking did not behave as expected, resolve that separately rather than extending a session you cannot reliably start or stop.

For the next attempt, change one thing based on what happened: the task size, the interval, or the distracting app you selected. Keep the note you wrote at the end. It gives your next session somewhere specific to begin.
